Parikh gestures to the gardens around him. With their bases now hidden by the vegetation and their walls obscured by thick creepers, Mandore Gardens is the home of a collection of ancient dewals, towering monuments to the old Maharajas of Jodhpur. While the cenotaphs are now in a state of disrepair they must once have been an impressive sight, almost like a miniature version of Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, their intricately carved red sandstone walls climbing high above the treetops.

The driver understood the cause of my torment. He could see the strength of the love I felt for the aryikas. He knew he wasn’t bringing us to safety, but to a peaceful place to die. After all the fear I’d caused him he still performed this act of kindness, helping my beloved family to a place where they could die surrounded by beauty, in the hope that it might remove some fear from their final moments. It was... it was very kind of him.
